4년만에 나온 프랑스의 일렉트로닉 신동 Madeon의 2집 메인 타이틀 곡 All My Friends이다.

자신의 우상인 다프트 펑크를 닮아가는걸까, 휴고(Madeon의 본명)도 완벽주의 기질이 있어 앨범 하나를 내는데 참 오래 걸린다.

그래도 그 긴 시간을 넘어 발매된 신규 앨범은 그 기다림을 보상받기에 충분하고도 넘치는 앨범이었다.

Pop Culture 때부터 느낀 것이지만 역시 보통내기가 아니다.

데뷔 앨범을 내고 난 이후로, 휴고는 개인적으로 약간의 우울증을 겪었다 한다.

일반인의 시선으로 보자면 잘 나가는 뮤지션이란 정말 이룰거 다 이루고 걱정 하나 없을 것처럼 보이지만

이들도 결국 다 인간인지라 각자의 개인적인 고충이 다 있다.

(샤이니의 종현, 린킨 파크의 체스터 베닝턴, 프로디지의 키스 플린트 등의 사례만 보아도 그렇다.)

그리고 그런 감정은 작게는 가사, 곡 하나의 단위로, 크게는 앨범 단위로 드러난다.

휴고의 1집이 자신의 10대 시절을 표현한 비교적 밝은 멜로디의 앨범이었다면,

이번 2집은 그의 내면적 성찰 및 앞으로의 음악적 방향성을 어두워진 멜로디로 표현한 앨범이라고 볼 수 있겠다.

(싱글 발매된 곡들의 뮤직 비디오와 가사 비디오를 보면 그 방향성이 꽤 두드러지게 노출된다.)

그 중 가장 두드러지는 곡은 역시 리드 싱글인 이 곡과 앨범 수록곡 중 하나인 Miracle이 아닐까 싶다.

과하지 않고 적당하게 신나는 드랍(특히 곡 말미의 베이스 리프가 진품), 그러면서 Madeon 특유의 음색을 느낄 수 있는 좋은 곡이다.

전작도 그렇지만, 전체적으로 휴고의 현 EDM 씬의 흐름을 거스르는 듯한 음악적 행보가 나에게는 정말 반갑게 느껴진다.

아마 근래 들어 획일화된 EDM 씬에 질림을 느껴서 그런걸까.

이렇게 자신만의 독창적인 일렉트로닉 뮤직을 선사할 수 있는 뮤지션이 꼭 성공했으면 좋겠고, 앞으로 더 나와줬으면 하는 바램이다.
